“This is a phenomenal program that I truly believe helps everyone…I am a female disabled vet that can no longer work due to my disabilities. Project Healing Waters has taught me to trust, men , and women as I obtained PTSD and Military Sexual Trauma during active duty from males and females in charge of me. A huge part of the program was the first time ( three years ago), I went on a trip. I was in awe when my guide put the trout back in the water, making sure it was alive, before swimming off. Since no harm was done to the trout , I was relieved. With PTSD you live with seeing and experiencing many harmful or threatening things in the military to yourself or someone you know. This still reigns as one of my favorite memories in the program…Through the program I am slowly regaining confidence emotionally and physically. Many trips they always say thank you to the veterans…which is so humbling as I left active duty no one said thank you.”

“It is such a joy sharing some beautiful parts of our wonderful State with wonderful people. Everybody is so kind, generous and fun to be around. It’s the people not the place which turns the beauty of where we are into a joyful experience. I’m so thankful and humbled having this opportunity.”

“I joined because I believe very strongly in taking care of veterans. When my son came back from Afghanistan, it really hit me. I was just doing my job in the military and wanted to make the world better for my kids. My son gave so much, as well as all of our veterans. We need to respect and honor our veterans and Healing Waters seems like a great program to help heal them.”

“I can say with all honesty that it’s been one of the best opportunities to serve others that I’ve been involved with. Even though I never served in the military, most of my friends and other family members have or are still serving. Seeing and sensing the pride in the service that others have for our great country is both motivating and inspiring. Being able to come along side veterans to assist them in a life activity is my way of saying; “Thank You” and to show my deep gratitude for their service…To say the least, I was a bit intimidated on my mentor training weekend but I was quickly put at ease by others in attendance. The genuine respect and desire to serve as a team overcame any concerns I had. I have since been involved in my first PHWFF weekend as the photographer and am hooked on being a part of PHWFF. Besides having an opportunity to impact participants by recording their weekend in photographs, I came away with some awesome friends; new friendships that impacted me personally over the course of the weekend. Thank you PHWFF for the opportunity to serve you!”

“I’ve been volunteering since 2015 and like to serve as a mentor. I always found fly fishing a relaxing stress reliever in my personal life. Spending my time with the vet passing along what I know while standing in a beautiful outdoor setting is reward enough. The conversation during the day is a huge bonus for me. At the end of the day, I often debate whether it’s more rewarding when my vet lands a fish, than it is when I catch one on my own. I’m leaning towards the former!”

“When I participate in PHWFF events I receive a small sense of giving back to those who have given so much for my safety and protecting our country. It is pure joy to assist in any way in making the lives of our veterans even a tiny bit better. Being part of PHWFF mends all souls.”
